Food Trees Project (World Agroforestry Center)
This projects main purpose is to develop and test innovative approaches to diversify the diets and livelihoods of the target beneficiaries for improved nutritional outcomes and to contribute to long term, inter-generational development goals. The project has been designed to use nutrition-sensitive agroforestry research for development to generate sound evidence and proof of application of the proposed activities and interventions. The project outputs and activities are founded with strong links to; i) a participatory community approach for developing the capacity of the target beneficiaries (and project partners) for long-term sustainability and ownership, ii) a behaviour change strategy to improve the knowledge and awareness of nutrition and beneficial agroforestry practices by designing and deploying IEC tools, and (iii) food and nutrition interventions based on the promotion of locally available and culturally acceptable agricultural-biodiversity, namely through food trees. This last link represents trees and agroforestry as a nexus of the agriculture-nutrition and health paradigm and as a pathway to a number of Intermediate Development Outcomes (IDOs) and the Science Level Outcomes (SLOs) of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR).
