The Consultative Group on International Agricultura Research (CGIAR) is a consortium of 15 research centers located in Africa, Asia, North and Latin America. Among the various research programs of the CGIAR is the Forest, Trees and Agroforestry Program (FTA), a program that has opted to invest in a landscape-level approach. A sentinel landscape is a geographically delimited space in which a wide range of biophysical, social, economic and political data is collected and monitored using research instruments such as those of International Forestry Resources and Institutions (IFRI), and the Land Degradation Surveillance Framework (LDSF). The objectives of this initiative is to identify the relationship between livelihoods and land health in forest landscapes that have been exposed to various forms of land use change and that of becoming an observation platform where biophysical and socioeconomic data can be monitored over time. This allows identifying patterns and can be used for the creation and subsequent implementation by the society of mitigation and adaptation best practices in each context.
